Ahead of 2020/2021 Nigeria’s football season, twenty-six players, including coaches of Yobe Desert Stars Football Club have their samples taken for COVID-19 test in line with NCDC guidelines.

Chairman of the Damaturu based Club and the State Commissioner of Sports, Youths and Social Development, Goni Bukar who disclosed this said that the samples were collected two days ago and was in compliance with the NCDC’s guidelines ahead of the resumption of football activities in the country.

Goni Bukar noted that he has already addressed the team and asked the players not to panic, stressing that, “anybody that is tested positive will be quarantined and treated.

“Our players have returned to camp. As you know, we have not had any express approval for football activities, but technically, we have to start training and screening of the players to get ready for the season.

“In line with the NCDC guidelines, we have conducted COVID-19 tests on the returning players and the coaches; 26 of them. We are not praying for anything to happen to them but in case of anything, we will just quarantine and treat them,” Bukar assured.

Some of the players who spoke on the COVID-19 samples collection said they were sure of their status but noted that, “we have to wait for science to confirm it”.

It was gathered that anxiety is brewing at the Desert Stars’ camp as the COVID-19 results are expected to be released on Thursday.
